Pelagic Trips in Chile

(8 days / 7 nights)

Our pelagic trip through the cold waters of the Humboldt Current commences early in the morning from Valparaiso pier. This biologically productive oceanic current, the nutrients of which are further enriched by upwellings from the ocean floor along the entire Chilean coast, is considered one of the world's best pelagic birding locations. It is also frequented by some interesting marine mammals.

The team at 'Fantastico Sur' excel; enthusiasm shines through, whether it's sharing their avian specialities, introducing you to awe-inspiring landscapes or chatting about their countries historic magical araucaria forests and magellanic woodpecker, wind swept goas with kelp geese and magellanic plovers, stands of bamboo with skulking but stunning tapaculos. All experiences I'll never forget. I'd join a Fantastico Sur trip in the blink of an eye and would recommend anyone else to do the same.

Our Pelagic Trips

Our pelagic trips through the cold waters of the Humboldt Current commence early in the morning from Valparaíso. This biologically productive oceanic current has a great abundance of nutrients and is further enriched by upwellings from the ocean floor along the entire Chilean coast. It is considered one of the world's best pelagic birding locations. We can expect to see a great variety of tubenoses such as Black-browed and Buller's albatrosses. On recent trips we have regularly recorded Salvin's, Chatham Island and Antipodes albatross as well as both Northern and Southern Royal albatrosses. We should also find Southern and Northern Giant Petrels, Southern Fulmar, White-chinned, Westland and Pintado petrels, Pink-footed, Sooty and Buller's shearwaters, and Pterodroma petrels including Juan Fernandez and Masatierra petrels. Small tubenoses of other families includes Wilson's Storm-petrel and Peruvian Diving-petrel. Other seabirds we may encounter are Grey (Red) phalaropes, Humboldt penguins, Inca Terns, and Chilean Skuas. These waters are also frequented by some interesting marine mammals, including Orca and Sperm Whale.

We also arrange pelagic trips off Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta in mainland Chile, and in Easter and Robinson Crusoe islands, in the subtropics.
