Aysén is the name of the Chilean region of northern Patagonia. This is one of the most pristine and undisturbed areas of the world, encompassing a fascinating diversity of eco-regions: from barren wind-swept steppes to exhuberant Valdivian temperate rainforests and the Chilean Fjörds. We have designed an in-depth natural history program aimed to appreciate the varied wildlife and dazzling scenery of this infrequently visited region of Chile. Join us on this comprehensive journey, especially designed for the naturalist and nature photographer alike, to discover part of the best-kept secret of the mythic Patagonia.

Chile trips 2004, 2005 and 2006
The Patagonian steppes expand from the eastern foothills of the southern Andes all the way across to the Atlantic Ocean in Argentina. Dense patches of low shrubs, scattered tussock grasses and a myriad of flowers cover this unique flat terrain. The mountain sheers facing these plains are the ideal habitat of the Lord of the Andes, the mighty Condor. We will visit Punta del Monte, one of the world's best locations to photograph this true icon of the Andes. Westwards, the magnificent rainforests create the most intriguing contrast. There are just five temperate rainforest ecosystems in the world, the Valdivian being the second largest. Currents of air coming from the Pacific Ocean drop its moisture in the western Andean slope, sustaining this huge emerald green expanse of forests.
After our arrival to Balmaceda we will be transferred south to Puerto Guadal, located right at the confluence of three emeral lakes: General Carrera, Bertrand and Negro lakes. Our base here will be the gorgeous and comfortable facilities of Hacienda Tres Lagos. Here we will have the opportunities to explore the private forests surrounding the estancia. Mild hikes to the hills will provide fantastic views of this setting, which is surrounded by lakes, mountains and ice fields. Aysén is indeed one of the most pristine regions of Chile.

This huge lake is the largest in Chile and part of it is shared with Argentina. Its whole western basin is densely covered by lush temperate forests and we will have the opportunity to discover part of its biodiversity, from skulking tapaculos to miniature Darwin's frogs. The highlight of the day will be a boat trip through the turquoise waters in order to approach and explore the curiously eroded caves of the marble outcrops of fantastic shapes and tonalities.

The forests and surrounding hills of Tamango Nature Reserve offers shelter to a significant part of the world's population of Andean Deer, locally called Huemul. This shy inhabitant of the southern Andes is depicted in the National coat of arms of Chile and is rarely seen in the wild due to its secretive habits. This deer is particularly tame here and we may get lucky by having great views.

Today we will head north towards Estancia Punta del Monte, located near Coihaique, the main town on this side of Patagonia. This is a working sheep farm and we will enjoy of the cozy facilities as well as the hospitality and knowledge of their owners. This is an area dominated by vast steppes and we will learn about the sheep farm activities by foot or horse, if you prefer.

Early in the morning, we will be transferred by our 4WD vehicles, to the surrounding cliffs holding considerable numbers of Andean condors, which roost here. As soon as the air warms up the condors perform their impressive glides, circling around and offering to the photographer a fantastic spectacle. We will appreciate the remarkable wingspan of this bird from various angles as we will be seen the birds from above as well.

Early in the morning we will be transferred to Balmaceda airport where we can catch our connecting flights.
