The campaign to reforest the Patagonia
In December 2011, a fire left a sad and sorry picture in Chile and the rest of the world: the fire destroyed 17,000 hectares of the National Park Torres del Paine, which represents 7% of the total area (242,000 ha) between native flora and fauna of one of the natural wonders of the world.
Currently, the National Park is open and receiving visitors from around the world for hiking and trekking in the famous Paine Massif, but there is still work to do to achieve recovery of the affected area.
Such was the international impact of this news, the executive director of the Chile Image Fundation (Fich), Blas Tomic, said "Patagonia is one of the structural elements of the Chile image and the distinctive geographic respect of countries of the region. Torres del Paine is a destination that foreigners identified and valued as natural capital of Chile and the world. In fact, the fire that occurred last December in Torres del Paine had great coverage in the international media, including the most important media in the world including The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC and Le Monde, among others. For example, only between 27 December and 2 January, 4515 publications were recorded on the subject in foreign media”.
One response to this incident was the creation of "Reforestemos Patagonia", a public-private nonprofit organization that unites the FICh, the National Forestry Corporation of Chile (CONAF), the Government of Chile, Southern Patagonia Company and ClanEco.
The goal is to plant one million native trees in the Laguna San Rafael National Park, Lago Castillo, Lago Carlota national reserves and Torres del Paine, mainly in the Lake Grey, Sarmiento, Nordenskjold (sector east and south), and Pehoé (3 hours of Refuge, Cabins & Camping "Los Cuernos") areas.
The participation is simple: with a contribution of U.S. $ 4 (CLP $ 2,000) in Webpay or Paypal you can buy a tree and select where you want to plant in the virtual forest. To ensure transparency of the process, we will send a confirmation with a link geo referenced on Google Maps, where you can see the location of your tree and share it with the world. After the purchase, the trees species planted are coigües (Nothofagus betuloides), lengas (Nothofagus pumilio) and ñirres (Nothofagus antarctica) and it will be responsibility of the CONAF.
"Reforestemos Patagonia" achieved notoriety through social networks, especially Facebook and Twitter, attracting the attention of the media in Chile and other countries.
In November, the "Reforestón", an event with the support of more than 50 journalists, television entertainers and famous actors seeking fundraising equivalent to 25,000 trees with topped prizes like cruises, luxury travel (all inclusive), prints from the chilean artist Samy Benmayor, a group meeting with Calle 13, an autographed guitar by Carlos Santana and Fernando González signed racket, among others.
Currently you can also contribute economically to the cause in the gift shop, buying a bottle of chilean wine, animal prints canvas bags, card games, iPhone accesories, wool slippers, water filter bottles, postcards and even a gift card to give a great gift to the Chilean Patagonia.
